Clothes That Make Us Look Fat and Tips for Dressing Thin

Sometimes, it's the doughnuts. But, sometimes, it really is a bad fashion choice that makes us look larger or rounder or just plain fatter than we really are. The Thread breaks down which fits and fabrics can give anyone a "what were they thinking?" moment.

What makes you look fat: • High waisted jeans as Jessica Simpson painfully showed us  • Shiny, clingy dresses that accentuate all the wrong places  • Tight tops that give the illusion of a baby bump when there isn't one  • Unflattering hem lengths  • Skirts with slits down the front (hint: side slits are much more flattering)  • Clothes that are too baggy • Patterns, especially stripes

What makes you look thin: • Dressing in one color from head to toe— and it doesn't have to be black • Choosing darker shades over brighter shades • Plunging necklines that draw the eye to your face and away from other problem areas  • Pointy-toed heels that add length to the leg and muscle to the calves
• Avoiding low rise pants and the dreaded muffin tops that come with them • A-line skirts flatter all figures
Do you have any slimming tips you'd like to share? Send us an email or post a comment below. Thanks for checking out The Thread. We'll be back soon from our Planet Hollywood studio in Times Square with a brand new episode.

I always put a belt around my waist when I wear flowy tops. Since I have fairly big boobs they make me look bigger than I really am and this helps with that.

The pointy toe and heel combo really works. I am only 5'5" and with the combo and a A-line skirt with a deep neck Looks Great!!! How do you think I got the Hubby!

If I'm wearing a tighter fitting top, wearing a cami underneath always does a good job of smoothing everything out underneath- just gives me a smoother look.

I have a question when you have a larger chest one just seems to look rounder. it doesn't matter if there is no tummy! I have a problem because not only is my chest large but my bottom is too!:-(

I am big up top and I have notice that if I wear low cutting shirts, but not too low, it does help with the droopiness.
