Cheap Vacations for Couples

By Laura Jane

Whether you're planning your wedding anniversary or you're just sweeping your sweetie off his or her feet with a surprise getaway, money can be concern. Even if you're on a shoestring budget, however, you can enjoy a nice vacation together. There are some simple, tried and true tips for getting away with your significant other on the cheap.

Cozy Up to a Nearby Bed and Breakfast
Before racing out of town, consider hanging out at a comfy, nearby bed and breakfast. Driving to a bed and breakfast is a lot cheaper than flying to some exotic island. You may be surprised by all there is to discover in your own backyard, like that art gallery you've always heard good things about but have never actually visited. Head to the closest big city or beach, or stay right by your home. Switching up your scenery and making it a mission to see the local sights together can really add that extra spark to your relationship.

Road Trips Spell Romance
What could be more fun than exploring without a schedule or even a clear direction? (Losing track of time is always a good sign when you're on vacation.) You and your sweetheart can create more long-lasting memories on a road trip than on almost any "stationary" vacation. Remember that time you drove in circles for an hour and a half, or stumbled upon that delish diner in the middle of nowhere? Drive up or down the West Coast or make your way to Disney World. It doesn't really matter where you go, because it's all about the journey that the two of you share. Stay in cheap motels along the way or try a reasonably priced RV.

Spontaneity Pays Off
If you want all the perks but none of the cost of an expensive vacation, wait until the last minute to book. Couples who procrastinate can cash in on cheaper airfare and hotel rates. If you're not picky about your destination or travel dates, planning your getaway at the last possible minute is often the cheapest way to go. Plus, the more impromptu, the more exciting it can be.

Go to Vegas
Las Vegas, Nevada, has always been an affordable destination, made for long weekends and that special breed of budget-conscious gamblers. If you live in the U.S., you can get away with a relatively cheap round-trip flight and hotel--assuming you're not too choosy about the airline and hotel you end up with. Sin City is an electrifying place for couples, even those who don't get married by an Elvis impersonator.

I love the idea of a road trip.

Just drive down to El Paso, Texas. Its straight down I-20 for what seems like forever but its a lovely nice long car ride.

Sorry you can go to Mexico for 10 days for only $500 a person FLIGHT & HOTEL, so just look for deals and certain times, traveling in the US is not my ideal vacation thing.

I second the Mexico idea, Cancun was CHEAP! All inclusives are the way to go, we actually came home with money.

Tell people you're Newlyweds and score free stuff :) (that'll work no matter where you're headed)

Check out the vacations from Sam's Club, super cheap, but great locations!

My husband and I had 'no money', so we started eating super cheap (but healthy!)food to save for our vacation. I also skipped ALL pharmacy purchases for two weeks (no lotions or girl potions) We lost weight and got to go away for a week! Totally worth it.

Another fun, cheap vacation we did was booking a hotel in a seaport town about an hour from home. The hotel was cute and clean, but cheap, saved on gas, walked around the shops and the beach and splurged on two great dinners! Then we watched movies in the hotel, which had HBO (which we don't pay for at home)and had a carpet pick-nick with various complementary foods from the breakfast buffet, hahaha. As long as I'm away from home, I'm resting as opposed to cleaning or organizing or thinking about 'real life'.

    Okay, have fun :)
