Teach tolerance: Take a stand against racial slurs

The other day my son was called a “saltine” in class.. and the African American child who called him that got away with moving her color clip (for behavior in the second-grade class). For those of you who don’t know “saltine” is another word similar to cracker – a derogatory term used against Caucasians. Research it yourself. I ask you – what would have happened had my son called this “minority” child a derogatory term? Would he have been suspended? It is indeed an interesting question.

The point I am making is this - racial “hate” is alive and well amongst our children – and it’s our job as parents to put an end to it, no matter what the color of your skin is, and no matter how YOU truly feel about the other race. It is our job as parents to raise kids who see no color, regardless of the prejudices we feel.  And it is sick and disgusting to hear this coming from the mouth of a second-grader who learned the behavior obviously from siblings or parents.

Quite frankly, the schools must step in and “parent” these kids, since someone failed to do so… and that’s unfortunate.  Step up, America . Teach your children to do the RIGHT thing. Teach tolerance. Teach acceptance. Teach peace.

(Update: the child who slurred my kid is being placed in in-school suspension).

What is "race"? I hear people throw that word around like it has some incredible meaning, so I have to ask the question, "What does it mean"? I have been spoon-fed various interpretatons and supposed meanings of this term, but it seems that every one of them is different. Who is who, and who falls into which category and who does not? How many supposed races are there? What is the basis of this ideology?
