How Michael Jackson's death impacted the online world

The Sun

The Sun

Michael Jackson's death has had an enormous impact on many of us--much bigger than we even anticipated. We've heard his music being pumped out of car radios, we've seen his videos and interviews on TV, and his face is on the front page of every news publication. But how did most of us hear of his death? The Internet. While big news companies like CNN stated he was hospitalized and in a coma, gossip site TMZ put the world in a frenzy by posting that the pop singer had in fact died. Paparazzi invaded the hospital and the Jackson family's personal space, even photographing the 911 paramedic's monitor (photo at left). Twitter-trending topics were overtaken by various incarnations of Jackson's name and people speculated wildly via Facebook updates. Is this where we now get our reliable news from? Tabloid sites and Twitter?

Gawker's site, Valleywag, kept tabs of the impressive impact the news about Jackson's death had on the internet yesterday:

  • Leading news websites saw traffic surge to 4.2 million visitors per minute from around 2.75 million visitors per minute, according to Akamai.
  • CNN's traffic grew five-fold in one hour and the site clocked 20 million page views.
  • Twitter had its biggest spike in traffic, to 5,000 tweets per second, since Barack Obama's election as president, according to co-founder Biz Stone.
  • Facebook status updates tripled.
  • AOL Instant Messenger went down for 40 minutes.
  • TMZ, which broke the news of Jackson's death, crashed several times amid a surge of traffic.
  • The LA Times, which got early confirmation of the death, went down, as well.
  • For about half an hour, Michael Jackson queries weren't working on Google News.
  • Wikipedia froze amid an edit war on Jackson's page.

We're not sure what other events could potentially lead to this level of online meltdown. For those of you who were doubting the huge, global impact of the king of pop, stand corrected. [Vallywag][The Sun]

Ha RM!! I feel the same way.... Right now I am so desensitized to his death that I really don't care anymore... at first I was sorry but now I just don't care... I didn't know him, I wasn't a fan and there is a helluva lot more important things to care about and keep up on... Things like oh I don't know Iran, North Korea, How congress is pushing a Global Warming bill through the House (probably without reading, again)... or friends to chat with and hear stories from...

But right now it's all about Michael Michael Michael.... I liked his early work and I respect his contributions to the music world... but right now we are being SO over-saturated with his death... and his life. That I just don't care anymore. Sorry if I sound callous and B****y but this is how I really feel right now.

This is the cause that I cared about... Far more than Michael Jackson dying...

Again, sorry for the callousness but this what I think and feel...

Some of the negative comments make towards MJ are unreal and unnecessary. He was never convicted of being a child molester, and if my memory serves me right, the family that accused him of such a behavior, was happier accepting a huge financial payment, than the have justice being serves... so it really makes you wonder about people's movites. As far as him getting justice by God... that is correct, so He is the only one who should be judge MJ, not everyone else with their opinions and speculations.

If you were not a MJ fan, cool... then shut your tv's off, and find something more constructive to do with your time. But there are many people out there who adored him, and feel a great loss to his passing. Let them celebrate his memory, and relive his music, in what ever why it touched a person's life.

As far as him being a drug addict... he faced a battle with prescription pills... it was his way of trying to cope and escape with his own personal physical and emotional demons. It can happen to the best of us, and doesn't make him a bad person for being a human being.

No, the man was not perfect, in any way, but who is...

We are celebrating his life, which is what most people do upon a loved one leaving this world... so what's so wrong with that?

Once again, I feel the need to point out some of the obvious points here that people who continue to focus on negativity about this man refuse to acknowledge.

People are gathering PEACEFULLY all over the world to celebrate this man's life and contribution to the world. That is extremely important. People were moved by Michael Jackson's music and brought together by his music while he was alive, and now they are being brought together to share their joyful experiences in remembrance of his life. That is the beauty and the power of art.

I have my personal feelings about the person, Michael Jackson. However, I do not feel the need to force that opinion on the masses who loved him. I certainly do not feel the need to lament his passing.

Michael Jackson wasn't just an important pop icon. He donated millions of dollars to charity, and worked hard to support causes like "We Are the World" and "Hand Across America"--causes that may well not have been as successful without his support.

I had posted a comment earlier. It apparently still has not gone thru. I wish I could recite this exactly as I did earlier, however, the main thing is that it came from my heart. Astrologers claim to have known Michael Jackson's death would be around age 50.

But tell me. Think about it. Do astrologers really know the time/year/age/etc. of anyone's birth, life or death? No. There is only one person whom can say anything about this. That is God. He chooses when, if, and how long we each live and die.

As for the comments that are so cruel, how can anyone say such things about someone knowing there are friends, family and many fans out there?

I agree. Right is right, but wrong is wrong. We are all only human. We sin every day. We shall answer one day for those sins that we fail to ask forgiveness for.

Let Mr. Jackson rest in peace. Let his family, friends, and fans mourn the way that they know best. Don't criticize without looking at yourself in the mirror. Just who is right? Who is wrong?

Let Michael Jackson rest in peace.

I also agree with Veronique. She sounds like a very resonable and non judgemental person.Kudo's

We are all gifts of God and isn't it our duty to leave a mark in time or in his case a legacy? I hope I am rememberd when I am gone...
