IN SEARCH OF SELF

Who am I?

What am I?

What do I need?

Why am I here?

What should I do?

            If you have been asking yourself these Questions you are not alone.  I have been asking the same questions for fifty five years. I am still searching. I would like you to look at my conclusions and respond with your own thoughts comments, and ideas.

            We are all born with the same needs. We need food, warmth, rest, exercise, love, touch, acceptance, information, and security.  We all have to learn to meet these needs to survive. How we perceive and meet these needs makes each one of us unique. It is said that we are separated from animals by our self awareness, our concept of time, and our imagination and from the Gods by lack of knowledge.

            No one can survive alone.  The first thing we must have is others to protect and care for us while we grow and learn. We learn to live from those around us and develop are values and self image from those we associate with. We will never have enough knowledge, strength, or time to do all the things we need to do to survive.

Pain is our greatest tool.  All pains are growing pains.  They teach us what we need. Pain lets us know that something is not right, that there is a need for change. Physical pain and emotional pain interact to tell us what we need to grow. No pain should be ignored.  The pain of guilt or loneliness can be just as debilitating as the pain of hunger or injury.  When you are in pain finding out where it is coming from is necessary,  it will continue and grow if you do not deal with it.

Guilt, fear, shame, and envy are examples of debilitating pain we have all been taught to feel.  Each of these emotions are based on the ideas we have learned when we were to young to understand or question what we were taught.  We have been taught not to make mistakes.  What is a mistake?  It is something that someone else believes that you should not do and since everyone sees the world differently every thing you could possibly do is a mistake.  The concepts of what is right or wrong, good or bad, and valuable or worthless are taught to us and can become a great source of pain if we do not examine them in the light of our current beliefs and situation.

We are also taught that there is not enough to go around.  Unless we get what we need and want we will have to go without.  This belief makes us fearful of others and in competition with them to get what we need.  It also makes us fearful of the future.  We become fearful that we will not have what we need, or that we will lose what we now have.  This is a false belief, we will always be able to get what we need and want.  With our abilities to think and create we can always find a way to meet or needs.  With all the resources of the world and all the knowledge of its people there is no limit to what we cannot create. We are only limited by the limitations we accept and inflict about ourselves.

The things we have to do to learn and develop our potential are very selfish.

  1. We must get to know ourselves and understand what our needs really are.
  2. We must examine what we have been taught to see if it is still valid.
  3. We must accept the person we are today.
  4. We must forgive ourselves for the things that we did in the past that we now think of as wrong. and continue to strive to do what we need to do in order to live and grow.
  5. Last, we must learn to love the person we are now.

This is the first of my blog publications in exploring human growth.  With your comments, help, and support we may be able to help ourselves and others.  I believe the best way to help yourself is to help those around you, {INLIGHTEND SELF-INTREST}
