Answering a point about illegal immigration raids vs blacks....

On your point about the mexicans..I am going to sound crazy, but having spent 24 yrs in the imperial valley, southern cal, southern florida,& now the ozarks.

You can give me 10 illegal working mexicans & I will trade you 1 useless, criminal intentive or welfare getting, non working Black person (deport them!)( I refrained from use of a harder word)..all statistics prove me out, and no one admits this..just think about it.

Every mexican I met out there was hard working, god fearing, polite, and family oriented. there was always a dad around, or at least supporting the family. I was never afraid to walk past a group of mexican men of any age!

Not the blacks..just the opposite, and I say this growing up in brooklyn ny...just the stats!!!! You could round up that many "wanted" blacks in 1 city in 1 day!

 Leave the workers alone!

I support Palin, & M cCain.

.I personally thought his immigration program would have worked. You need to have them all identified no matter how you do it.There are more tax paying illegals than tax paying blacks!... FYI I am a 54 yr old republican woman, of italian heritage.

There is alot to be said for people who will work hard. And you are right. The majority want to just better themselves and make a better life for their families. Sometimes their own country won't allow that to happen because of oppressive governments or other causes. But, still, our government needs to do much more to help OUR COUNTRY first, instead of squandering the money elsewhere for people who don't appreciate what we do for them anyways.

I understand this is a free country, despite how offensive your blog was. There are plenty of hardworking black men out there. I would be just as stereotypical as to argue the opposite. I work in the hotel industry. And if you know anyhting about that, then you knw that we have alot of non-english speaking employees. While i admore the fact that it is a very equal oppurtunity workplace, i despise the communication barrier that we have to face. It is nothing more frustrating than to have a task that needs to be met, however it is prolonged because your co-worker can understand you. When most of the time that is just a hoax. I do however see your point. I also work with a few black men who tend to slack as well. And i am saying this from a Black Woman's perspective. However to use the words criminal intent is not only stereotypical it's bordline racist. Every black man does not have a record, every black man does not have a scary demeanor, every black man doesnt slack on there job. And regarding deportion. Well exactly where should we be deported back to? You dont suppose the place that we were shackled and taken out of hundreds of years ago, do you? Ignorance is truly bliss.

And regarding the truth hurting. Well Obama's pastor stated some hard core facts about our Nation. That really had to hurt, because they wrote him off as negative and un patriotic. Why is it okay for some to voice what they see as the TRUTH, yet when others put popint out some interesting facts, it's blown out of porportion. It's mindframe like this, it's comments like this that will forever keep the nation divided. Maybe if we all focused on ourselves and our problems then we wouldnt spend so much time speculating the next person. God said " For whosoever is without sin, cast the first stone." I dont really think that anyone can throw stones at any race or culture for that matter. we all have differences. But let some tell it, their race is more superior. Please people, please. This crap has been going on for so long, it's stupid now.

    III. INCARCERATION AND RACE

The disproportionate representation of black Americans in the U.S. criminal justice system is well documented.17 Blacks comprise 13 percent of the national population, but 30 percent of people arrested, 41 percent of people in jail,18 and 49 percent of those in prison.19 Nine percent of all black adults are under some form of correctional supervision (in jail or prison, on probation or parole), compared to two percent of white adults. 20 One in three black men between the ages of 20 and 29 was either in jail or prison, or on parole or probation in 1995.21 One in ten black men in their twenties and early thirties is in prison or jail. 22 Thirteen percent of the black adult male population has lost the right to vote because of felony disenfranchisement laws.23

    Admissions to Prison

Racial disparities in incarceration increased in the 1980s and 1990s as the number of blacks sent to prison grew at a faster rate than the number of whites. 24 Between 1979 and 1990, the number of blacks as a percentage of all persons admitted to state and federal prisons increased from 39 to 53 percent.25 Although the admissions for both races, in absolute numbers, rose sharply, the increase was greatest for blacks (Figure 1).

Human Rights Watch has been able to analyze state prison admissions based on raw data on 37 states gathered by the Bureau of Justice Statistics of the U.S. Department of Justice through its National Corrections Reporting Program (NCRP) for 1996, the most recent year for which this data is available. In 17 of these states, blacks constituted more than half of all prison admissions (Table 2). Maryland had the highest percentage of black admissions, 79 percent, followed by Illinois with 74 percent, Louisiana with 73 percent, and New Jersey with 72 percent.

    Overrepresentation of Blacks in Prison

In every state, the proportion of blacks in prison exceeds, sometimes by a considerable amount, their proportion in the general population (Figure 2). In Minnesota and Iowa, blacks constitute a share of the prison population that is twelve times greater than their share of the state population. In eleven states -- Kansas, Montana, Nebraska, New Hampshire, Oregon, Rhode Island, South Dakota, Utah, Washington, Wisconsin, and Wyoming --the percentage of the prison population that is black is more than six times greater than the percentage of the state population that is black.
