Test your summer nutrition IQ!

This Sunday, June 21 (which also happens to be Father's Day ... a big shout-out to my dad!), is the official start of summer. To kick it off right, I created this short quiz to help you have a safe, healthy, yummy summer. Take the quiz, then read the answers. Let me know how you did!

1. You're at a summer BBQ and your host asks you how you like your burger grilled. For the healthiest patty, you should instruct the grill master to cook it...

a. Rare
b. Medium-well
c. Very very well

2. Next, your host asks you what kind of cheese you want on your burger. To get the biggest calcium hit, you should choose...

a. Lowfat cheddar
b. Full-fat cheddar
c. Lowfat Swiss

Check out these 20 superfoods for weight loss!

3. Don't forget to use condiments! You're split between mustard and catsup, but you don't want both. You're watching your waistline, so you want the one that's the most diet-friendly. You slather on the...

a. Ketchup
b. Mustard

4. Holy heat wave, it's hot out here. Gotta quench your thirst. You head over to the drinks table and find a great selection of freshly squeezed juices. To get the most vitamins, you should grab...

a. Red grapefruit juice.
b. Apple juice.
c. Pineapple juice.

5. OK, how about a REAL drink. Luckily, your host is playing bartender with a full selection of bar favorites. You're game, but want to keep calorie count to a minimum. You order...

a. A Long Island iced tea (4 oz)
b. A margarita on the rocks (4 oz)
c. A piña colada (4 oz)

Answers

1. B, medium-well

Cook it rare and you may not cook all the bacteria (salmonella, E. coli). Cook it very well done and you create more HCAs (heterocyclic amines), which can raise your cancer risk. Cook it medium-well and you minimize the HCAs and cook it fully. To make sure you cook your meat fully, use a meat thermometer. The USDA website lists safe cooking temperatures for all types of meat.

2. C, lowfat Swiss

An ounce of lowfat Swiss—about one slice—has about 270 milligrams of calcium (the same as 6 ounces of milk). One oz lowfat cheddar has 118 mg, and 1 oz full-fat cheddar has 204 mg. Grilled cheese goes healthy: Turning an old time favorite into a healthy (still delicious!) eat.

3. B, mustard

Hello, yellow! Not only is mustard a lower-calorie option at only 3 calories per teaspoon (compared to ketchup's 5 per tsp), but new research shows the turmeric in mustard can help fight tissue inflammation that triggers obesity.

4. A, red grapefruit juice

Not only are you getting 100 percent of your RDA for C, but you're downing lycopene as well. Apple and pineapple juices are much lower in vitamins than most juices. Is juice healthy? Here's what you need to know.

5. A, Long Island iced tea

Shocker! This drink—famous for containing a laundry list of liquors—is actually, ounce for ounce, the least caloric, with just 127 calories for 4 oz. The margarita on the rocks has 197 calories (a frozen only has 156). If you like piña coladas, beware: They pack a wallop at 235 calories. Make your happy hour healthier with these tips!

be careful with the grapefruit juice. It messes with a whole bunch of medications for asthma, heart disease, allergies etc etc.

I got them but I don't drink so I wouldn't go down that route anyway. I love grapefruit juice in the morning. It has been a running battle in this house,,white or red? I l love mustard, plain or fancy, so that is my choice for hambuger or ham sandwich and I like it medium. Of course when my DH is grilling, you get it very well done no matter how you ask for it. LOL Swiss cheese is not something I eat much. I prefer very thinly sliced, purple onions and cold crunchy pickles on my burger.
