Are you a disordered eater?

Tonight, I'll be accepting an award from the Newswomen's Club of New York for a story SELF ran last May, called The Disorder Next Door. While it's exciting to get the kudos, it's especially gratifying to see the media shine a light on an issue that affects millions of women: disordered eating.

According to the SELF-University of North Carolina survey--a poll of over 4000 women--6 out of every 10 women suffers from some form of disordered eating, falling into one of these categories: A Food Addict, a Calorie Prisoner, a Secret Eater, a Career Dieter, a Purger or an Exercise Addict. So what is disordered eating? It's eating behavior and thoughts about food and weight that are unhealthy for a woman's body and psyche. A disordered eater isn't someone who has a bona-fide eating disorder (anorexia, bulimia, binge disorder), but she doesn't view food and eating normally, either. A non-disordered eater, for example, eats when she's hungry, stop when she's full, and doesn't engage in extreme behaviors (meal skipping, fasting, diet pills) to control her weight. A disordered eater, on the other hand, might spend 50 percent of her day thinking about food and her weight, perhaps going to extremes to control it (restricting her calories below what is healthy, or cutting out whole food groups).

Perhaps you--or someone you know--fits this description. To find out if you might be at risk for disordered eating, take our quiz. The good news is that once you ID the behaviors that aren't healthy or that are interfering with your happiness and enjoyment of eating (it's a pleasure, afterall!), you can work your way toward the healthier end of the spectrum.

The antidote to disordered eating? Finding your Happy Weight, the weight your body can healthfully stay at without you having to obsess over every calorie (or every curve). Check out these tips on how to find your weight and celebrate your gorgeous self.

Yep, I'm a disordered eater. I have to be careful with this because I dealt with eating disorders for many years. And, with my addictive personality, I'm on the fringe of falling back into my old ways. It took years of therapy to overcome my eating disorder and I don't want to throw it all away, but it's still a struggle for me.

i eat for all the wrong reasons, I like to snack, when I am bored I eat...when I am lonely I eat..but especially when i am stressed , I eat...even if it is a bite here and there, but those bites add up! I am 20 lbs overweight...but dont look it..I have to constantly walk and keep up with exercise to compensate for my snacking...if I dont, I would gain another 20!

I got a score of twenty. I know for a fact I think unhealthly. I am VERY slim, but it does bother me that my stomach kind of sticks out. I lost most of it, but was on medicine that made me horribly restless as well as taking away all my appitite, and I used to walk a lot. I've also been on medicine that made me horribly hungry and terribly sleepy/tired. I didn't gain too much weight, but it was really fast. My biggest fear at least weight wise is that I'll end up like the people that say they used to be really slim and ended up really big(although they may have been exagerating the smallness due to jealousy, idk).

I would also love to see a scoring chart. I scored a 34.

I love food. I love to cook and bake. I make most things homemade. I am an emotional eater. I too eat when I am bored, sad, angry, etc....

I have lost about 40 pounds since Christmas. I am still over weight and it is all I can think about. I need to lose about 20 more pounds. I walk 2 miles a day. I exercise often.

29_and holding - she had a widely televised tummy tuck which was provided free of charge by the plastic surgeon. Don't fool yourself that this woman lost her baby weight on her own. Go google a before the plastic surgery pic... You or I could have a tummy like that for free, too, if we w----d our kids out on national TV.

I eat when I drink alcohol so if I don't drink I don't snack and therefore lose weight. As long as I'm not an alcoholic I don't have a problem. I take breaks from alcohol for a month here and there and maintain my weight just fine for me. If my doctor could get my pain under control I wouldn't drink at all. It gets to the point where I'm just so sick of pain that I need to drink to give myself some relief. At that time I snack a lot and gain 3-5 lbs. It's a viscious cycle all of it's own. :(
