WTF of the day: Model Erin Wasson says homeless people have the best style
editor
I'm just going to warn you
right now, the video that comes after the jump is one of the
grosser displays of fashion-girl idiocy and insensitivity I've
seen. Worse than that, it's evidence of a kind of
rich-kid-goes-low, fauxhemian attitude that when I was younger I
completely thought was cool, but now find impossible to watch. In
the clip, famous model Erin Wasson talks about her new line of
clothing and the inspiration behind it. At one point she calls a
pair of ultra-short sparkly silver shorts "bitchin'," which is
annoying, but not as bad as what she says next: "The people with
the best style for me are the people that are the poorest. Like,
when I go down to Venice beach and I see the homeless, like, I'm
like, 'Oh my God, they're pulling out, like, crazy looks and they,
like, pulled ----- out of like garbage cans.'"
To be fair, I do understand this kind of creative revelation. There are
certainly fine artists who derive inspiration from what they see
around them, as sad or shocking as it may be. But Wasson will most
likely be selling way overpriced (and perhaps tacky--read: Daisy
Dukes and a blazer) clothes at Fred Segal to girls who go to
Beverly Hills High. And these overpriced clothes will have somehow
been influenced by people who can't afford to buy clothes, but
instead grab their garments from the trash. And somehow, to
me at least, this seems wrong. Judge for yourself...
