How much do you spend each year to look good?

I was sitting around with friends a couple of nights ago and the conversation got on and stayed on make-up and all manner of female maintenance—the shampoos, the lotions, the unending hair removal, hair cuts, hair colors, etc, etc. My friend Chuck was the only man among us and he had lots of questions:
How long does it all take?
How did you learn this is what you were supposed to do?
How much does it cost?
Does it cost more now than when you were a teenager?
And the four of us answered. Now, you're talking to women who are relatively low maintenance and don't spend all that much time or effort on being perfectly coiffed and made-up. Still, once you added up everything, all the waxes and concealers and mascaras and creams, it came to about an average of $3,000 a year (for me). Which is insane and even kind of sad. My friend Courtney admitted that she can't leave the drugstore without spending $100. My friend Melissa discussed how she is always buying new blowdryers. I had to admit that I spend $300 on my hair, about five times per year— it is my one indulgence and I loooove it..
Underlying this conversation was an odd sense of both shame and exhilaration. It's super-fun being a girl. Amazing, actually. It's also stupidly expensive and kind of lame that we fork over significant cash for our physical upkeep and that men would never dream of doing the same (Chuck called this "the secret lives of women").
The issue led me to find this story in Siren Magazine called "Why Vanity Keeps Us Poor." In it, the writer talks about how the cosmetic and toiletries industry is, worldwide, a $45 to $66 billion business and that American women spend an average of $12,000 annually on beauty products and grooming. Wha???
Wow. That's like the cost of a car or a seriously fancy vacation. Of course, you wouldn't look cute in your new car or on your amazing vacation and that, admittedly, pathetically, might ruin the entire experience.
Sigh.

Here's my answers to Chuck's questions:

1.How long does it all take?

-It depends on the day but it usually takes me an hour to get ready.

    2. How did you learn this is what you were supposed to do?

-By watching my mother put on make-up and other people around me.

    3. How much does it cost?

-I have no idea how much I spend, but I do know that it costs way more than it should.

    4. Does it cost more now than when you were a teenager?

-I will say that the prices of beauty products seem to have gone up since I was a teen, that and I am buying higher quality products now.

I always had a "knack" for these sorts of things & learned very early on how to do my own manicures, pedicures, eyebrows, waxing, and haircolor touch-ups. With that said, I'm also pretty talented at doing my own makeup, and theorize that if you know HOW to apply the makeup, you don't necessarily need to spend a whole lot on the type of makeup (i.e. I buy mainly drug store brands). I go in for highlights about 2x/year, and my hair is what I probably spend the most on (probably about $1500-$2000/year), have an expensive gym membership, and spend on tanning and teeth whitening as well. I love how people are always asking me who does my eyebrows, my hair, my makeup, nails, etc. - and I can reply "ME!" I can't imagine how much money I SAVE annually by doing these things myself, and really encourage all women to learn at least some of these maintenance skills!

I can pretty much do everything myself, but sometimes I really want someone else to do it for me. I don't mind spending money on something that is going to make me feel good. Pedicures are more for the massage than for the polish. I spend average amounts on makeup but recently spent more on mineral make-up. The foundation makes my sesitive redish skin look great. My normal spending on all my products including shower supplies, runs about $50 a month. We are talking shampoo, conditioner, body wash, face wash, lotion, sunscreen and other misc. items I think are nice to have. I have way more products than I use on a daily basis, but after a hard night of drinking that depuffing cream comes in handy when I need to look presentable at work. Sure cold tea bags will do the same thing, but they take 20 mins. I usually only have 2 mins.

And I only spend this money, becuase it is just me and I have no one else to worry about. If you are a parent getting hair extensions, manicures, and pedicures but your family does not have proper clothing or food. You should be ashamed of yourself!

Most beauty products are so overpriced. I do look for ingredients... like alpha hydrox in moisturizers and night creams. No hair products with alcohol. So, while I am picky about products, I also don't overspend. Most makeup artists carry Maybelline mascara , in the pink tube. Available at any drug store. My downfalls are manicures and pedicures... every two weeks.

I just can't see spending huge amounts of money on makeup, or hair, or anything. I mean, I want to look nice, and I normally do, but I still have a hard time spending a lot on it. I use makeup from the dollar tree, lol. But at our dollar tree, they get the good stuff that the department stores are done selling. It's not outdated or anything, and sometimes you can get a real steal. But I just use concealer and powder, my skin has finally gotten over its major breakout stage. I love to experiment with eyeshadow, so I just get the cheap stuff. It works fine for me and I don't feel like I'm wasting expensive product. I do love the maybelline great lash mascara, and they sell it in our walmart 2 for $4. As far as hair stuff, I use the suave smoothing shampoo and conditioner, which is pretty cheap, less that $2 a bottle. Suave mouse and gel and stuff, which they carry at our dollar tree as well. I dye and cut my own hair, and I have gotten many compliments on it. I don't get manicures or pedicures, honestly I just am too cheap, lol. I tend to get annoyed with fake nails too. I do my own eyebrows, I don't go to the tanning beds, I just shave as opposed to getting waxed, and I'm happy with the way I look. Yay for dollar tree!! :D

I love being a girly-girl, but I won't go overboard. I guess my biggest expense is my hair, which I get cut about 6x a year, but I don't get highlights, bleach, or dye so it's still relatively inexpensive. Facial moisturizers are next on the list, as I'm addicted to The Body Shop's Kinetin line, and that stuff is expensive (to me). I also get most of my makeup at The Body Shop, and the cost is between drugstore brands and department stores/Sephora, so I'm not going too crazy, IMO. I do my own nails, I don't like to wax much, my eyebrows have a great natural shape, so I do the cleanup on those myself. I use makeup and beauty routines to enhance my features, so I keep it pretty simple, and I do get a lot of compliments on the way I present myself (esp. my skin), so the expense is worth it, to me. Plus, it's part of the fun of being a female!

I enjoy looking nice but can't bring myself to spend a lot of money on products and such... I cut and color my own hair and have since I attended cosmetology courses in high school 10 years ago. Same thing with nails and skin care... I actually went for my first real faciail ever last week as a bday gift to myself. $65 to have someome else clean my skin... while it was immensly relaxing and enjoyable I don't think I'll be doing that again any time soon. I cannot fathom it when that money can fill my gas tank for the week, feed me for the week etc... I actually felt guilty about spending that much money on my face. I pay $14 (thank you Target) for my hair color every 2 months or so and that I'm okay with!
