Bad Publicity

Why is it that whenever I’m grocery shopping or passing by a news-stand do I see a celebrity being trashed? More so why is it that some publishers targeting teeny-celeb’s like Miley Cyrus, from Disney’s Channel Hannah Montana. Why do some teeny-celebs receive such bad publicity because they are a mega hit to our youth? Does the reader of such magazines really care about this negative attention? Yet, why do publishers even bother to produce such garbage? ‘Cause they got nothing better to do?!

The media seems to pick at the smallest detail and twist the scenario around. We all know how bias and corrupted the media’s reporting can be. Yet we seem to believe everything that’s in the tabloids, right? Pictures worth a thousand words, right? Wrong! In an artistic point of view, Ms. Cyrus posed in December 2007 producing some photos that were purely innocent; but they was depicted at as sexual and called them inappropriate.

I’m not a major fan of Miley Cyrus, but when I look at her I notice her for her great contributions, the humorous television show she does, and that she’s making something of herself in today’s society. But Ms. Cyrus is not alone, she’s only one victim of bad teeny-celeb publicity. A few other victims are: Britney and Jamie Spears, Ashley Tisdale, Macaulay Culkin, Michael Jackson… Some readers can argue that they put themselves in the spot light, so they must be opening themselves up to such gossip. Even ‘if there was better parenting....’ or ‘ more conservative upbringing…’ such negativity wouldn’t surround them. I say no!

Britney Spears has been in the spotlight for a short time. Of all the young pop-singer and actresses, she’s endured a lot of harsh criticism and she’s only been in the music industry for a decade. Back in 1999, about the release of her second debut album ‘Oops!... I did it again’ there were rumors about a potential boob job; Only when she released her first movie “Crossroads” and her album titled ‘Britney’ she was subliminally informing the media that she’s an adult, she cannot be looked at nor treated like a child. With her sassy lyrics and self-respect to appreciate her body, the media begins to portray her as a sex idol (which tastefully worked for her career). It wasn’t until her publicized breakdown did the media really over step the line when they made the comment:

‘…now that she is staying home, the Spears photo business is in a serious recession, this means a national recession…’

Since when are we to blame a single celebrity for the stock markets slowly declining, for the greedy stock market brokers, or for major United States company’s not to blame for their outrageous neglect to secure the assets and not rely on credit, Britney Spears? Nonetheless who cares about a boob job, her sexual preferences, and spending habits? Shouldn’t we value and respect her for her hard work? Acknowledge her for the many records and songs she’s produced. Or better yet, the fact that she’s insanely rich and standing strong despite all the drama that’s followed her, that Britney is still a one-woman show and enjoying her life doing what she loves? I would love to have her job. You know doing something that I love, that makes me happy, despite what anyone thought of me…

Even Michael Jackson and child celebrity Macaulay Culkin were targets of such bad publicity that these once popular, even icon individuals were forced into isolation because of nasty tabloids, paparazzi, and news reporters. I believe that Michael Jackson’s death could have been preventable if it wasn’t for the media forcing him into isolation (which they mocked him for his facial features, his music, his personal life... and more).

I’m not reporting on false evidence. I’m not defending any celebrity, but I think as a social reader of magazine articles on celebrities, that we are shallow. We are no better than the sleazy-paparazzi and journalists that have no better objectives than to stalk our favorite celebs; None the less, not realizing that we place our idols and favorite celebs in terrible danger from psychopaths.

What do you plan to do next time you spot these ridiculous news stories? I’ll still look ‘because I love a good laugh, but I encourage you to seek out the facts of a celebs situation before encouraging such hypocrisy. I just know that as a human being with a conscious and loyalty to my childhood icon Kirk Cameron whom played Mike Seaver on the Growing Pains, whom was mocked for being a brat on television and is now a Christian crusader, I would hate to see him or any other celebrity forced to make the decision to isolate themselves, and to suffer a death as heartbreaking as Michael Jackson. Nobody should have to live like a caged rat and left to die without the aid of their supporters.

So what do you plan to do next time you stop and read a tabloid or ridiculous magazine article? Do you really care about best/worst dressed? Where that celebrity your reading about was eating or working out?  I say nope!
